Spotlight on Leadership: Q&A with Alison Kelly, Co-Chair of the Junior Board

From volunteering at Thanksgiving dinner to stepping into a leadership role, our Junior Board Co-Chair Alison Kelly shares how being part of Nazareth Housing has shaped their perspective, built community, and deepened their commitment to our mission.

How and why did you first become involved with Nazareth Housing?

I was introduced to Nazareth Housing through a friend and board member, Ross Sarraf. At the time, Ross was a member of the Junior board and invited me to attend the Annual Benefit. I was so impressed with Nazareth’s mission and work throughout New York City. The organization was able to make a significant impact in peoples’ lives despite its modest size. At the Benefit, I also met several of the Junior board members and learned about how the Junior board contributes to Nazareth’s efforts. I joined the Junior board shortly thereafter and it has been such a rewarding experience.

What has your time volunteering and now serving on the Junior Board meant to you personally?

The Junior board’s commitment to volunteerism was one of the things that most interested me. The volunteer opportunities have allowed me to become a part of the Nazareth community. Through events like Book Club and holiday celebrations, I’ve been able to forge relationships with both the Nazareth clients and staff.  I feel fortunate to be able to contribute to Nazareth’s mission and to be a part of such a special organization.

Is there a specific event or moment during your involvement—whether volunteering or serving on the Junior Board—that stands out to you?

My first volunteer event with Nazareth was a Thanksgiving dinner. It was the first Thanksgiving dinner following COVID, and you could really sense how happy the clients and staff were to be celebrating together in person. I got to meet and spend time with so many clients that evening, many of whom I continue to see at other events. At that dinner, I realized what a special community I had joined.

How has stepping into a leadership role as Co-Chair changed your perspective on the Junior Board’s mission and your own abilities?

Assuming a Co-Chair role has afforded me an opportunity to learn more about Nazareth, its needs, and how the Junior board can contribute to the organization. Through this leadership role, I’m able to engage with the Nazareth staff more regularly to discuss their priorities and focus areas and how the Junior board can help further the same. I am also fortunate to have an amazing Co-Chair, Charlotte Myers, who is incredibly supportive, collaborative, and a lot of fun.

What are you most excited about for the Junior Board in the months to come?

The Junior board membership has changed a lot since I joined five years ago. I am excited to have so many great new members that have joined over the past few years. The group is really committed to furthering Nazareth’s mission in new and creative ways. We’re about to begin our 2026 planning, which we hope will include some new ideas to support Nazareth and its clients.
