Stephanie Mendez Honored with Award for Excellence in Homelessness Prevention

On September 17, 2025, Stephanie Mendez, Senior Case Manager at Nazareth Housing’s Lower East Side office, was awarded the Neighborhood Defender for Excellence in Homeless Prevention at the Annual Gala hosted by Homeless Services United (HSU). The award was presented by HRA Commissioner Park and DHS Administrator Carter in recognition of her outstanding commitment to advocating for families and individuals facing housing instability.

Commissioner Park introduced Stephanie to the audience, highlighting her dedication:

“Stephanie works closely with individuals and families facing housing instability, providing advocacy, connecting them to public benefits, and guiding them through complex systems to secure affordable housing and achieve long-term stability. … Stephanie has a deep commitment and empathy for the people she works with. She’s an incredible advocate.”

Stephanie began her career at Nazareth Housing in 2017 as an intern while completing her associate’s degree in human services at Guttman Community College. She went on to become an Intake Coordinator, then Case Manager for families in shelter, before advancing into her current senior role. Her work has included helping clients navigate complex systems to secure emergency assistance, preventing evictions, and celebrating with families as they move into permanent housing.

Reflecting on the award, Stephanie shared:

“It was such an amazing feeling to be recognized for the work I pour so much of myself into. I’m deeply passionate about helping my clients and making them feel supported, seen, and heard, so to have that dedication acknowledged in this way was really meaningful.”

She added that the recognition reinforces her lifelong commitment to human services:

“The award represents the purpose I set out with when entering the field—to help and support families through their challenges. It’s an accomplishment that shows my dedication is making an impact and inspires me to keep moving forward.”

Stephanie’s career is rooted in her own lived experiences. Growing up in an economically disadvantaged community, she saw firsthand the effects of poverty and the challenges families face every day. This inspired her to pursue a path in human services, determined to make a difference.

As she continues in her role, Stephanie is focused on building stronger community connections, deepening her knowledge, and continuing to advocate for lasting housing stability.

Nazareth Housing is proud to celebrate Stephanie’s accomplishments and grateful for her dedication to empowering families and preventing homelessness across New York City.
